A Lovely Labyrinth of Camellias : Odongdo Island
Please enjoy vibrant smells of Spring Camellias flowers in the Odongdo Island.
Known far and wide for its camellias, Odongdo Island is without doubt the most beautiful tourist spot in Yeosu City. Odongdo Island was designated as part of the Hallyeo Waterway in 1968. It offers a wonderful view and idyllic natural settings as it is home to 193 rare species of trees and is bordered by towering cliffs and peculiarly-shaped rocks. This beautiful island is connected to the shore by a 768-meter-long. 11.7 meter-wide breakwater. It was once a navy base where Admiral Yi Sun-Sin himself put his command through raining. The piping sound emanating from the bamboo groves on windy days still harkens back to the cry of the forces who trained there at the time of the Japanese invasion in 1592. The island has spawned a number of legends as well. According to one, the camellia, which blossoms in early spring, symbolizes a woman's chastity.
In various places on the Odongdo Island, vistors can visit raw fish restaurants, and enjoy fresh sea slugs, sea squirts and sliced raw fish. They may also take the Camellia Train running on the breakwater or get on a tour boat for a breathtaking excursion of the surrounding waters and islands.
What is more, there is a forest where visitors can enjoy relaxing walks and an aquarium where 4000 species of fish and other aquatic creatures can be seen. Around May every year, the island holds the South Coast Sea Food Festival in which visitors can try numerous delicious foods and get into the festive spirit. Yeosu is stepping up its efforts to fully develop Odongdo Island. A new botanical garden has been built and now open for tourists every day and other wonderful attractions are being planned.
