When you first arrive in Korea, you may feel bemused by the Korean writing on shop fronts, buses and restaurants. The lack of spoken and written English used in everyday life here can be quite a shock to new arrivals. Don't give up hope!
Koreans are the most friendly people I have ever met and will go out of their way to help you. Those who do speak a little English will often approach you to help should you be looking lost or having difficulty in a shop.
When I first arrived, a friend and I were trying to find another teacher's apartment. We had a simple map with the address. We asked a young couple if they could help by pointing to the map and looking confused. The guy simply said "follow" and they preceeded to walk us for 10 mins to the apartment block. When we arrived they escorted us up in the lift to the 8th floor and even took us to our friend's apartment to make sure we had the right place. This is just one of many examples of the way I have witnessed Koreans going out of their way to help. So if, when you first arrive you do feel a little daunted by the language barrier, remember there will be someone close by who will be more than happy to help you out. |
