[Culture Experience for Foreigners]
UNDERSTANDING KOREAN BUDDHIST CULTURE
Available for Foreigners at Buk-chon!
The Institute for International Buddhist Cultural Development offers you traditional Korean Buddhist culture programs for foreigners on 25 March (Every Thurs.) to 28 May (Every Fri) at Buk-chon Culture Center in Seoul.
There are two classes: making various traditional lanterns; and drawing cosmic design (Dan-chung) and Buddhist painting (Bul-Wha).
Dan-chung refers to a Korean-style decorative coloring used in buildings or equipment to represent beauty and majesty, and is done by applying various patterns and paintings in certain areas. Five basic colors are used: red, blue, yellow, black and white. You can see Dan-chung when you visit a temple or a palace in Korea.
Lotus Lantern is one of Koreafs traditional lanterns. One of the offerings for Buddha is a lantern. The lantern symbolizes wisdom. When you light a lantern, darkness flees, likewise if you light your mind with wisdom, your delusions will disappear. You can enjoy the process of making a lantern of your own.
You can also participate in Lotus Lantern Festival on 23 May, 2004.
This will be a good opportunity for foreigners to learn Korean traditional culture as well as practice speaking Korean!
It is sponsored by Seoul Metropolitan Government.
There are 26 traditional culture classes in Buk-Chon Culture Center. Most other classes of Buk-chon culture programs are for Koreans, but our programs (making traditional lanterns & drawing cosmic design/Buddhist painting) are open to both Koreans and foreigners (mainly English speaking ones).
