The prophet Muhammad did his Hegira, or "flight," from Mecca to Medina to escape persecution in 622. In Medina, Muhammad made his religion--Islam--into an organized community and Arabian power with his followers. The Hegira would later mark the beginning (year 1) of the Muslim calendar.
