Hong-ik Univ.
- Drinking with the Youth of Today

The Hongdae (or Hong-ik) district presents much more to visitors than a route to nearby Hong-ik University. In addition the area is an insight into Korean youth culture. After the tremendous emphasis placed upon education for Korean schoolchildren, university students are understandably eager to celebrate their success in passing entrance exams, and Hongdae is the perfect platform for their non-stop partying.

Good and inexpensive restaurants are everywhere - ideal for lining your stomach in preparation for a night of drinking Korean style. One such place is Cafe Aqua, a Thai restaurant a minutes walk from the station. Take a left from exit 6 and walk as far as Family Mart - Cafe Aqua is on the 5th floor of the building opposite. A good selection of mains start at \7000, Wine is about \19,000 per bottle, and 6 bottles of beer are just \20,000. The decor is a sophisticated blend of contemporary and traditional, the food is delicious, and a backdrop of soothing Jazz adds to the restaurant's tranquility.

By midnight Picasso Street and the surrounding area starts to get lively. The Queens Head is a good option for warm up drinks and weather permitting the balcony and courtyard areas are situated perfectly for a spot of people watching. Officially a British pub, The Queens Head is not so exclusive that other foreigners and Koreans alike do not frequent, but the selection of non-Korean
Beers and Wines does provide solace to newcomers longing for a dose of home comfort in liquid form.

Other recommended bars include Abbey Road - any music lovers dream, where requests can be made from the hundreds of records and CD's behind the bar. Also Bar 69, a trendy, yet welcoming drinking spot with comfy sofas and a good cocktail menu!

If you're looking to go clubbing check out Hodge Podge. The music is a mixture of britpop, indie, and dance favorites. Other options playing similar tunes include Honky Tonky, Saab, and Havana. Most clubs close at about 6:00am. Enjoy!
