Namdaemun Market
With a history spanning back over 580 years, Namdaemun Market, the biggest conventional market in Seoul, is a true example of the Korean way of life. First started in 1414, it offers a display of Korean culture and tradition, and attracts many foreign tourists.
In addition to this, almost everything that can be bought at a reasonable price, including clothes for children, men and women, shoes, kitchen utensils and appliances, electric appliances, food, accessories, and traditional crafts to name a few. Basically, it's possible to find almost anything you want at the market.
More than 50,000 people work in the market's 10,000 stores, and many of the vendors design their own clothes which are then sold at half the price of the other markets.
Kitchen goods are generally 30-50% cheaper than elsewhere, and many optician's shops sell designer frames and famous branded sunglasses at a very reasonable price. Namdaemun market has been considered the best place to shop for children's clothes for many years.
Namdaemun Accessory Stores
It's worth paying a visit to Namdaemun's accessory stores where you'll find a wide range of the latest accessories on sale. If you walk to the left of the main market entrance, you'll discover several shopping streets, such as Younsei and Yousung, and Namchan, Woojoo, Hanil, Olimpic and Samho are on the road towards Samik Shopping Town. These streets have about 2,000 accessory stores. and although they previously sold mainly imitations of famous brands, now about 50% to 80% of the stores produce their own items.
