Chojun Textile & Quilt Art Museum

Textile & Quilt Art Museum, located at the bottom of Mt. Nam, is the only museum in Korea displaying textile artwork. Its aim is to show how traditional Jogakbo (Quilt in Korean) was made and to spread the Korean textile art and know-how across the world.
Permanent exhibitions are held.   Also contests take place on occasions, enticing visitors to get to know Korean kilt making.
Kerchiefs, traditional embroideries, traditional textile pieces over 100 years old;a total of 152 pieces of traditional embroideries and quilts (Jogakbo), 32 traditional accessories, 89 Korean traditional costumes, 260 Chinese traditional dresses, 52 Chinese accessories, 95 western quilts and patchworks, 25 western perpendicular quilt pieces, 310 traditional foreign dolls, etc.   These are some of the items displayed in the Museum.

The art of making Jogakbo and traditional Korean tablecloth is now dying somehow, as there are not enough artists with the right abilities. Covering cloth is a natural cloth that was used to wrap goods and during ceremonies.   It is the most known cloth in Korea.

This fabric is used for making tablecloth, to wrap books, to make quilts, etc.
Traditionally, cloth would be embroidered with trees, flowers, fish, skulls, phoenix, butterflies, etc.   The thread used would be naturally dyed, with gardenia or mugwort water.

The colours of the patterns are complementary to the cloth's colours, so they can be seen easily.   This is typical of Korean textile art.   Flower patterns are used the most and the geometric pattern of the Jogakbo is as good as modern abstraction.
Chojun Textile & Quilt Art Museum is located between Mt. Nam and Myeong-dong, and can be a great tour course from Myeong-dong to Chojun Textile & Quilt Art Museum and to Mt. Nam.
