Garakdong agriculture and marine products market

A storehouse for food in Seoul, Garakdong market is one of the most famous markets in Korea, and it is probably the second most popular area for foreigners who travel to Korea. The market is wholesale, not only for Seoul, but the entire country
The market originally opened in 1985 as a fruit and marine goods market, and then in 1998, it was opened for direct sales.   It covers over 133 acres of land with 150,000 people visiting every day and sales at 3.7 billion won.

Visit the market, and check out the action.   It¡¯s so loud with dealers yelling out prices and buyers arguing over goods every single morning.   It¡¯s quite a place, and you can actually pick up some healthy looking vegetables as well.

Garak market is divided into three main areas for sales: agriculture, marine goods and livestock.

The agriculture market has over 1730 different fruit and vegetable shops, opening at dawn and closing around 10 am for the retailers.

The marine goods market opens until 7 o¡¯clock for wholesalers, and after 9 o¡¯clock they sell to the general public. Prices are really reasonable, with prices on fresh fish 10 ~ 25 % cheaper than in the supermarkets.

The livestock market runs like a slaughterhouse, with fresh meat sold from 150 cows and 2,800 pigs every day.

The purpose of establishment
To ensure smooth mass distribution of agricultural and marine products
To maintain reasonable prices
To protect the interests of producers and consumers
