Jongmyo

Jongmyo was founded in 1392 during the Jongseon dynasty, whose ideology was devoutly Confucian. The sanctity of the ancients was so important then.

UNESCO adopted Jongmyo Royal Shrine as a ¡®World Heritage Site¡¯ in 1995.

Jongmyo Shrine is located in Jongno-gu, Seoul, where it enshrines the memorial tablets of the kings of the Joseon Dynasty. Two main buildings still remain, with Jeongjeon and Yeongnyeongjeon housing all tablets.
A great religious ceremony takes place on the first Sunday in May every year at Jongmyo.
Held in honor of Joseon Dynasty¡¯s ancestral kings, the performance includes Jongmyo religious ceremony music, Intangible Cultural Asset No. 1.   Visitors can also visit nearby ancient palaces and Daehangno (street).
