Ohjukheon(Black Bamboo house), Shin Saimdang and Yi yi

Shin Saimdang is one of the most well respected and well known mothers of Korea. Her son was Yi yi, a famous politician and scholar during the Joseon dynasty. Yi yi was born in Ohjukheon, at the house where Shin Saimdang grew up. Ohjukheon is located 3.5km north of Gangneung.
Shin Saimdang was an accomplished poet and artist, while Yi Yul-gok was one of the most outstanding Confucian scholars of the Joseon period.

Yi Yul-gok learned the classics from his mother at a very young age and subsequently won first prize in the state examinations for future government officials in 1564.   After that he served in various government positions.

Gangneong Municipal Museum forms part of the complex with house painting, calligraphy and embroidery as completed by Shin Saimdang and Yi Yul-gok.
The Yulgokje Festival is held at the shrine on the 26th of October every year when traditional rituals are reenacted and classical Korean music is played.
