Museum of Korean Straw and Plant Handicraft

Korea has the only Straw and Plant specialized museum in the world. Since 4000~5000 years ago until, now Korea has been an agricultural society.
For this reason our ancestors made many tools out of straw and plants. Because the tools didn't last long, and because farmers didn't think they were very important, finding ancient remains of these tools is difficult. This museum displays some of the straw tools that have been found. The museum was built in 1993 to restore the original pieces. At the museum there are various kinds of dishes, cushions, baskets and other ornaments made of straw and plants.

You can find items such as; Seom, Gamani, and Jipdok at the museum. Seom was made for carrying grain. They were made in different sizes to measure different amounts of grain. Long time ago people used rice as tax and the Seom was used to carry it.
Gamani is a container that rice, grain, and salt are stored in. A Gamani holds 80kg of rice.   Jipdok is a pot made of straw and is very strong. Some of them are large enough to hold up to 160~240kg.

There 3500 other items made of straw and plants at the Museum of Korean Indigenous Straw and Plant Handicraft. There are ornaments that are over 100 years old. Also the museum has 1000 dishes that were used in memorial services, 200 sets of gates from the traditional houses and 500 tops from all over the world. Because the museum is small you can't see all of these displayed at once but through planned exhibitions you can have a chance to view all of them.
