Comments About Us

Dulsori was formerly founded as Noripae Mulnori in 1984. At that time, Dulsori’s main performance style was Madanggeuk, a Korean traditional theater form in which the separation between the performers and the audience is minimized.   And today, we try many different kinds of performances based on the traditional rhythm of Korea.

We work enthusiastically to decrease the gap between the performers and the audience.   Because we believe that when these two sides meet directly and come together, we can create a festival in which exchange of energies and unity of community could take place.

Another mission of Dulsori is to promote enjoyment of life.   When we work and play with eagerness, life will be rich! We cannot explain how you can achieve this goal through words alone. We can only show you with our performances how we could come together to enjoy life.

Korean traditional culture is a foundational guide in our creative work.   We have developed unique performances and interactive programs.   We believe that creating a sense of community is important in any cultures.   Our performances and interactive programs attempt to build harmony and unity of community among the audience members and performers.

Totem Pole

The Totem Pole has appeared in many forms in different cultures. It may express a pragmatic need or a spiritual desire for the unknown. A Totem Pole represents spirits for the group. As the people described their history, it became a symbol of a village. Furthermore, the totem pole has evolved as the group has changed. Jangseung, the Korean Totem Pole, has a special relationship with Korean people as it has always stayed with the people in the village and provided security to them. This close relationship is represented in the jangseung’s face which resembles the face of the people.

Wooden Jangseung couldn’t be relics because the wood does not last forever. For this reason, jangseung have become symbolic objects of life in different times. The features of a Jangseung express the features of the time of its creation.
The Korean totem poles no longer exist for religious reasons.   Now Jangseung has value as an object of art.   Because the totem poles represent universal characteristics of folk beliefs and cultures as well as their own regional uniqueness, Dulsori often choose Jangseung as a medium to create and share Korean culture with others in the world.

TAO

The main goal of the Dulsori’s performance is community participation. We believe that when performers and audiences unite in a performance, openness and harmony can be realized.

In “Tao” performance piece, Sound is the first indication of a new world creation. Sky, land and humans communicate with each other. A totem pole is created, connecting the three (sky, land, and humans). Their languages are unified, and new living things are created through their communications. In the sky, the Sun shines. On the land, new living forms emerge.   And the human beings breathe in life. As the short and long breaths continue, the rhythm of the soul dances and gives new energy out.

The energy of the spirits overflows and audiences are invited to the beginning of the world. Primitive life increases in activity. Chaos of a group begins a rite for a new orderly system. With increasing reliance on human beings, love of life grown out of the primitive and wild impulses makes a great wave. Through the wave, we wish to be part of the new cosmos and the vanished utopia.

Interactive Programs about Korean Culture

Traditionally, the relationship among the work, the nature, and the people is very important in Korea.   Koreans understood and acknowledged the inseparable coexistence of these three elements.   Many of Korean folk activities are based on this belief.   Dulsori has been developing and presenting these programs that are based on the concept of Korean folk activities. Experiencing Korean culture is not only having knowledge about a culture of a country but also realizing its fundamental values.

Because culture can be understood much better through hands-on experiences, not through lecture course, Dulsori offers interactive cultural programs whenever and wherever people desire.

Organization of Interactive Programs:

1. Learning Korean culture - Traditional Garac(rhythm), Sori(song), Momjit(dancing) are taught in this section. A sense of nature and breathing are fundamental part of this part.
2. Creating Korean culture – Participants will make totem poles, flags, and straw crafts. The materials all come from nature. Through working with natural materials, participants can create arts from the daily folk activities. Also participants will understand how these activities are related to labor.
3. Community activity - Community activities of Korea are derived from the traditional Korean thanksgiving rite.   Through the rite, people wish for the community’s welfare and prosperity.   The rite and the gathering of the community keep the bad spirits off and express the community’s desire to have a new orderly life and world.

Youth Training Center

Dulsori runs the Youth Training Center in Yangsan. The programs are based on traditional Korean culture and vary with the themes and the seasons. Also educational courses on Korean culture are offered.   Through the development and experimentation of cultural programs and arts, Dulsori strives to find creative ways to globalize Korean culture.
