Taking the Subway in Seoul

Seoul, the central city of Korea, has a very good public transportation system.   You can easily find a subway station if you just walk ten minutes from any major street.
Foreigners do not need to hesitate to get on the subway since English announcement are provided along with the Korean service.   As the old Korean proverb 'Look before you leap' says, however, you will need to know the basics.

To your destination!
Look at the subway map and you'll notice that the lines are classified by the colors as red, green, orange, and blue.   There are a total of 8 subway lines in Seoul, and each is classified by a line number as well as a color.   You can transfer to other lines at the transfer points, which are clearly marked and announced.   You'll never get lost if you just follow your line carefully.

How to use passenger tickets
Subway fares are pretty cheap. One-way tickets to most places in Seoul are 600Won.   If you have only paper money, go to the ticket booth. Tell the ticket vendor the name of the station you would like to go to and hold up your fingers to indicate the number of fares you wish to buy. He will give you change and your tickets.

Should you prefer machines to people, and happen to have change on hand, then try using the ticket vending machines. Select the button for a one-way or round-trip fare. The cost of the fare will be displayed. Insert the coins until the amount displayed reaches zero. Your ticket will be dispensed into a cup in the lower half of the machine. Take it and don't lose it.

If you are planning to explore Seoul by subway for more than 1 week, you'd better purchase a prepaid (10,000 Won) ticket.   If you purchase prepaid tickets, you are automatically getting 10% bonus rides.   If you are traveling in a group of more than 20 people, take advantage of group fares.

Etiquette
Smoking is prohibited in all subway stations and make sure to yield seats to the old and the weak.

Tip) Travel guidebooks and lost-and-found centers.
Seoul subway Corp. is operating tourist information desks at 5 subway stations.   You can get info. on transportation, lodging, and shopping there.   It is also operating lost-and-found centers.
